Advantages of Castable

Saves Time

The biggest industrial advantage that castable refractories offer is the time they save. Take the case of a furnace, for example. The castable refractory is made before its usage. Therefore, it significantly reduces the construction time of the furnace. Additionally, the castable refractory does not require extra baking time. That allows one to use their time efficiently.

Ease in usage

Castable refractories are pretty easy to use. But what is even better is how easily they can be cast in different shapes. Moreover, when treated and prepared, Castable refractories can meet harsh conditions without noticeable changes.

Significantly Better Structure Performance

Castables refractories are monolithic refractories, which is one of its biggest selling points. Once applied, the castable refractory can handle the harsh condition of the working environment for an extended period. Additionally, it also requires little to no maintenance throughout its life. That allows for overall sound structure performance and durability.

Application of Castable

Furnace and Kiln Linings: Castables are widely used to line furnaces and kilns in various industries, such as steelmaking, cement production, and glass manufacturing. They provide a protective layer that withstands high temperatures, chemical attack, and abrasion.

Boiler Linings: Castables are employed in boiler linings to protect the boiler tubes from the intense heat and corrosive gases generated during combustion.

Incinerators: Castables are used in incinerators to line the combustion chambers and flue gas systems, where they resist the harsh environment of high temperatures, toxic gases, and abrasive particles.

Foundry Applications: Castables are used in foundry applications to form molds, cores, and pouring cups for casting metals. They provide high temperature resistance and good heat transfer properties.

Repairs and Patching: Castable can be used to repair damaged or worn refractory linings in furnaces, kilns, boilers, and other industrial equipment.

Types of Castables

Low Cement Castables
Low cement castables (LCC) are a type of refractory castable that are made with a low amount of cement content, typically less than 5%. The low cement content results in a highly dense and strong material that has excellent mechanical and thermal shock resistance.

Self-Flowing Castables
Self-flowing castables (SFC) are a type of castable refractory that are designed to be highly fluid and able to flow into complex shapes and areas. They are made with a special binder system that allows for excellent flowability and self-leveling properties.

Insulating Castables
Insulating castables (IC) are a type of refractory castable that are designed to have a low thermal conductivity, resulting in excellent insulation properties. They are made with lightweight aggregates and high-purity binders, resulting in a material that is both strong and lightweight.

High-Alumina Castables
High-alumina castables (HAC) are a type of castable refractory that are made with high-purity alumina aggregates and binders. They have a high alumina content, typically above 80%, resulting in a material that is highly resistant to abrasion, corrosion, and erosion.

Mullite Castables
Mullite castables (MC) are a type of castable refractory that are made with mullite-based aggregates and binders. Mullite is a high-temperature ceramic material that has excellent thermal shock resistance and chemical resistance.

Silicon Carbide Castables
Silicon carbide castables (SCC) are a type of refractory castable that are made with silicon carbide-based aggregates and binders. Silicon carbide is a high-temperature ceramic material that has excellent thermal conductivity, abrasion resistance, and chemical resistance.

Phosphate-Bonded Castables
Phosphate-bonded castables (PBC) are a type of refractory castable that are made with a phosphate-based binder system. The binder system results in a material that has excellent chemical resistance and high strength at high temperatures.

Steps for Proper Installation of Castables

Here are the significant steps involved in the installation of castables:

Preparation

It is essential to ensure the substrate is clean, dry, and free from dust. If necessary, you can use a bonding agent to improve the adhesion between the substrate and the castable.

Mixing

You must follow the manufacturer’s instructions when mixing castable with water. An appropriate amount of water is essential to achieve the desired consistency. To hydrate well, leave the mixture for a few minutes, which helps obtain its desired properties.

Applications

You can apply the castable mixture into molds or forms. Now, spread the material evenly and vibrate it to eliminate the voids or air pockets for proper consolidation.

Curing

Castable should be cured properly until the recommended period of time, which may range from 24 to 48 hours. To achieve the desired strength, avoid rapid moisture loss and temperature fluctuations.

Things to Remember When Using Castables

● It is mandatory to store the castables in a dry, cool area to prevent hardening and moisture absorption.

● Keep them away from extreme temperatures and direct sunlight.

● Avoid using old castables that may be contaminated and affect the overall strength and durability of the castable mix.

● Must use drinking water to mix castable. Being aware of the manufacturer’s instructions can help you achieve the right consistency.

● Mixing castables needs extra care and attention. Too much heat production can speed up the setting time and may fail to achieve the desired strength.

● After pouring the castable, it must set for 24 to 48 hours without causing any disturbance.

Cover it with a polythene sheet to avoid rapid moisture loss and maintain proper temperature through the process.

FAQ

Q: How you can control your quality?

A: For each production process, we have a complete quality control system for chemical composition and physical properties. After production, all goods will be tested and always undergo a final inspection before shipment;

Q: What's your delivery time?

A: It usually needs about 20days- 45 days after receiving the deposit.

Q: Do you provide free samples?

A: Yes, we can provide a free sample for testing, If we have sample in stock, The quantity based on the material type, The buyer should bear all the shipping costs.

Q: What is your MOQ?

A: We don't have particular MOQ, we can accept any order for any different projects.Price depends on quantity.

Q: What is difference between castable and refractory?

A: Refractory cement is a material for making refractory concrete. Refractory castables are made of refractory aggregates, powders and binders. They are also called castables because they are poured. Refractory mortar can be divided into clay, high alumina, silicon and magnesium refractory mud according to the material.

Q: How long does it take for a castable refractory to cure?

A: Be careful while mixing castable, like castable refractory cement. Too much mixing generates heat and speeds up the setting time. The forms should be covered with oil or grease to prevent moisture loss. After placing the mix, the castable needs to be cured for 18 to 24 hours straight.

Q: What is the ratio of castable to water for refractory?

A: Too little or too much water may reduce the dry/cured strength. As a general indication, a suitable ratio to begin trials would be 2 parts castable to 1 part or less of water, by volume, not weight.

Q: What is the temperature of refractory castable?

A: Conventional dense castables are created with high alumina cement and can withstand temperatures from 1300oC to 1800oC. These refractory castables are great for common furnace applications, burner blocks, speciality muffle furnaces and boiler work.

Q: How many types of castable are there?

A: Refractory castables can be used to create the monolithic linings within all types of furnaces and kilns. They can be further classified into the following sub-categories: conventional, low iron, low cement, and insulating for installation either by gunning or manually.

Q: What are the uses of castable?

A: Castable refractory products are non-metallic materials with physical and chemical properties that allow them to withstand high temperatures and retain their composition. Some of their common application is in furnaces, kilns and boilers.
