Mullite castables used for burner nozzles in aluminum melting furnaces must withstand temperatures of 1400–1500 °C. In addition to high refractoriness and excellent thermal shock resistance, the burner blocks must also exhibit strong resistance to high-velocity hot gas erosion and dust-laden atmospheres. Therefore, high-grade bauxite clinker and aluminosilicate minerals (such as sillimanite, kyanite, and andalusite) with superior refractory properties are selected as the primary raw materials. Reactive α-Al₂O₃ micropowder and silica fume are used as binders, and appropriate additives are incorporated to improve workability.
