Chrome Fused Alumina forms a stable Al₂O₃–Cr₂O₃ solid solution at elevated temperatures, providing superior resistance to alkaline slags and metal oxides compared with conventional corundum. In refractory formulations, it is commonly used as a key aggregate or reinforcing phase, significantly enhancing erosion resistance and extending the service life of refractory products.
Chrome Fused Alumina is produced by adding a small amount of chromium oxide (Cr₂O₃) to high-purity alumina and smelting it in an electric arc furnace, resulting in its characteristic pink to purplish-red color.
It exhibits a hardness slightly higher than brown fused alumina and comparable to white fused alumina, with a microhardness of 2200–2300 kg/mm². Its toughness is higher than white fused alumina but slightly lower than brown fused alumina.
Abrasives made from this material are particularly suitable for grinding high-carbon steel, high-speed steel, and thin-walled components. In addition, it can be used as a polishing material, foundry sand, blasting media, catalyst carrier, and in the production of special ceramics and refractory materials.
