Magnesia refractory mortar is an amorphous refractory material used for masonry of magnesia refractory bricks. It is mainly made of high-quality magnesia sand, and is mainly suitable for mortar fillers of magnesia refractory bricks such as magnesia bricks, magnesia-alumina bricks, magnesia-chrome bricks, and as a protective coating for magnesia masonry. Magnesia refractory mortar has the characteristics of high refractoriness, high load softening temperature, low apparent porosity, high bulk density, etc. It can effectively resist the scouring and erosion of high-temperature metallurgical melts and protect the furnace lining from damage. In addition, it also has certain mechanical strength and good air tightness, suitable solidification time, high bonding strength, and good high-temperature performance. It is a good mortar for masonry of magnesium products. It is widely used in refractory masonry in metallurgy, chemical industry, building materials and other industries, and has achieved good results. ‌
It is mainly composed of periclase crystal phase and has a magnesium oxide content of more than 80%, which is an alkaline refractory material. Magnesia refractory mud can be used as a caulking material for refractory masonry, to strengthen the connection between refractory bricks, and to improve the overall refractory performance of furnace walls. The raw materials of magnesia refractory mud mainly include magnesite, seawater magnesia and dolomite, etc. After processing, these raw materials are formed into materials with high refractory resistance. The use of magnesia refractory mud is of great significance to improving the service life and efficiency of industrial furnaces.

Magnesia refractory mud uses various magnesia sands as raw materials, combined with clay, bentonite or chemical binders, or directly prepared with brine (MgCl₂). Magnesia refractory mud is mainly used in open-hearth furnaces, electric furnaces, oxygen converters, non-ferrous metal smelting furnaces, etc., which are built with magnesia bricks, magnesia-chrome bricks, magnesia-alumina bricks, etc.

Classification and application Magnesium refractory mud can be divided into hydraulic, heat-hardening and air-hardening refractory mud according to the coagulation and hardening characteristics of its binder. Hydraulic refractory mud uses cement as a binder and can be used at room temperature or in places where it may be in frequent contact with water or water vapor. Heat-hardening refractory mud is often made of heat-hardening binders such as phosphoric acid or phosphate. After hardening, this kind of mud has high strength at various temperatures, small shrinkage, tight joints and strong corrosion resistance. Air-hardening refractory mud is often prepared with air-hardening binders such as sodium silicate. This kind of magnesium refractory mud can make the joints of masonry tight.

 

 

Composition The powder for making magnesium refractory mud can be selected from fully sintered clinker and other various refractory raw materials with stable volume. The particle size of the powder depends on the use requirements, and its limit particle size is generally less than 1mm, and some are less than 0.5mm or finer. Reasonable particle composition has a great influence on ensuring the construction performance of the mud, and the same is true for binders and admixtures. With the higher requirements of users, chemical binders have been used more and more widely. Adding various admixtures to refractory mud can improve the construction performance of refractory mud, such as adding water retaining agent to extend the water loss time and ensure the construction quality; adding plasticizer can increase the plasticity of mud when the amount added is small; adding dispersant to improve the fluidity of mud, etc.
