
Zirconium ramming mass is mainly composed of zirconium aggregate, powder, binder and additive. It is a kind of amorphous refractory material with low plasticity and is a refractory material used in glass kilns.
There are two kinds of zirconium ramming mass commonly used in glass kilns, namely zircon ramming mass and fused AZS ramming mass.
Although the two zirconium ramming mass have similar anti-glass erosion performance, due to the extremely low content of AM) in zircon ramming mass and the difference in apparent porosity of the two ramming mass, through analysis and comparison, fused AZS ramming mass is more suitable for the bottom ramming layer of soda-lime-silica glass, electric vacuum glass and other alkaline glass kilns, while zircon ramming mass is more suitable for the bottom ramming layer of weakly alkaline glass kilns such as borosilicate.

Two commonly used zirconium ramming materials and their performance advantages
The performance of refractory materials in resisting high-temperature glass liquid erosion is an important factor in determining the life of glass kilns and the quality of glass products. Zirconium ramming materials can be widely used in the bottom of glass kilns. In addition to having the characteristics of good integrity, good sealing, and strong adaptability, they also benefit from the superior anti-erosion performance and ultra-high refractoriness of zirconium materials. Zirconium aggregate is the skeleton of zirconium ramming materials and plays an important role in the high-temperature physical properties of zirconium ramming materials. At present, there are two main types of zirconium ramming materials used in glass kiln bottoms in China: one is electric melting AZS ramming material, and the other is zircon ramming material.
The fused AZS ramming material is made by crushing the fused zirconium corundum brick into particles of about 5mm as aggregate, and then mixing it with other auxiliary materials. It retains the advantages of fused zirconium corundum bricks, has strong resistance to glass liquid erosion, low porosity, extremely stable performance, and can well inhibit the invasion of glass liquid and metal. The zircon ramming material is made by adding a certain proportion of crushed sintered zircon brick fragments to the zircon mud powder as aggregate, and then adding other auxiliary materials. It has high refractoriness and good resistance to glass liquid erosion. When constructing the two types of zircon ramming materials, you only need to add an appropriate amount of water in proportion to mix them. After mixing evenly, make the ramming materials moist and loose, then ram them, and sinter them at high temperature to form a solid whole. The construction abandons the previous use of phosphoric acid as a binder, which is safer and more convenient.
Physical and chemical properties of zirconium ramming mass for glass kiln
The ramming mass for glass is usually zirconium ramming mass. The so-called ramming mass is composed of refractory aggregate, powder, binder and admixture with a certain grade. It is dry or semi-dry loose. It is mixed with water or other liquids for construction. It needs to be rammed strongly to be dense, so it is called ramming mass. Ramming mass is usually named after the material of the refractory material used.
The room temperature strength of ramming mass before sintering is low, and it has high strength only after sintering. Therefore, the performance and service life of ramming mass at high temperature are related to the sintering quality before use. The sintered body should shrink very little, not expand, have no cracks, and be firmly bonded to the bottom refractory bricks. The following are the commonly used zirconium ramming mass for glass kilns.
(1) Zircon ramming material
Its composition (mass %) is ZrO2 62, SiO2 32, Al2O3 2, Fe2O3 0.5, the bulk density is greater than 3g/cm3, the refractoriness is about 1790℃, and the maximum particle size is 0.5mm. The binder is aluminum dihydrogen phosphate, which has strong bonding, high strength and high temperature resistance, but it is easy to dry and agglomerate, and is not suitable for long-term storage. It is corrosive to the skin and inconvenient to use.
(2) Zirconium corundum ramming material
The molten cast AZS clinker is used as refractory aggregate. The composition (mass %) of this ramming material is ZrO2 30, Al2O3 48, SiO2 20, the physical phases are α-Al2O3, mullite, baddeleyite, glass phase, and the maximum particle size is 5mm. When using, just add water and stir. The volume density reaches 3.2g/cm3, the porosity is 12%, the tendency of precipitating bubbles is weak, and it has strong resistance to erosion by glass liquid at 1400℃. It can also be used as a sealing layer and mud material.
(3) Low shrinkage AZSC ramming material
It is a material with a certain amount of chromium-containing material introduced into the basic composition of AZS. Its volume density is greater than 2.9g/cm3, and its linear shrinkage after re-firing (1400℃, 3h) is less than 0.2%. Its resistance to glass liquid corrosion is better than the above two ramming materials. When used, it can also be used as a sealing layer and castable by simply adding water and stirring.
Zirconium castables are composed of fused corundum, zircon powder and micro powder, and use silica sol as a binder. It has excellent resistance to glass liquid corrosion and is easy to pour and construct. It is widely used in hot and cold repairs of glass kilns.
